PAGE 10 PAGE 6 In his latest book Trauma and the Soul (published 2013), Donald Kalsched continues the ex- ploration he began in his first book, The Inner World of Trauma (1996)―this time going fur- ther into the mystical or spiritual moments that often occur around the intimacies of psy- choanalytic work. It tells stories of ordinary patients and ordinary psychotherapists who, through working together, glimpse the reality of the human soul and the depth of the spirit, and are changed by the experience. The lecture is based on the contents of this new book. Dr Kalsched’s lecturing style is most accessible – substance without jargon.... As a speaker he is clearly comfort- able with his material and with his audience and this makes for pleasurable listening. He begins with a quote from Jung: In every adult there lurks a child – an eternal child, something that is becoming, is never completed and calls for unceasing care, attention and education. That is the heart of the human personality which wants to develop and become whole. He presents a number of interesting cases the first of whom is Carl Gustav Jung! Those who are familiar with the first few chapters of Memories, Dreams and Reflections will recognize some of the material - the life of C.G . Jung portraying his early trauma, his soul’s retreat into an inner sanctuary, and his gradual recovery of wholeness through the integration of his divided self, culminating in the fifteen or so years spent on the Red Book. Donald Kalsched is a Jungian analyst in private practice in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and a training analyst with the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts. He is the author of numerous articles in analytical psychology, and lectures widely on the subject of early trauma and its treatment. Venue: Mary Lockett Lecture Theatre In the F.J.
